1 Samuel 15:11 - "It repenteth me that I have set up Saul to be king: for he is turned back from following me, and hath not performed my commandments. And it grieved Samuel; and he cried unto the Lord all night." What a powerful verse! We're either for God, or against God. When we sin and disobey God, it not only dishonors and hurts Him, but it hurts others as well. When Saul turned away from the Lord, it hurt both God and Samuel. It hurt Samuel to the point that he cried all night in prayer. On the other hand, Samuel was so close to God that he shared the same heartbreak with Him. Are we like Saul causing God sorrow, or are we like Samuel with the heart of God and praying for those who are stumbling in sin? - Garrett Longest

Joshua 7:25b-26a:  "And all Israel stoned him with stones, and burned them with fire ... So the LORD turned from the fierceness of his anger." Achan's sin resulted in his death and the death of his children. From Genesis to Revelation, we see God's paradigm of sin and punishment. Cain, David, Eli & his sons, Ananias & Sapphira; example after example. "As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten," Jesus warns. All this is written so that we will not sin because we fear God. It's terrible that so often Christians gloss over this truth, even to the point of redefining words (we've all heard or read that "fear" of God just means "respect"). When I consider how God punishes and scourges his disobedient children, I don't merely respect or reverence Him. I am afraid of the pain of punishment; in other words, I fear Him. Joshua 7:13- "Up, sanctify the people, and say, Sanctify yourselves against to morrow: for thus saith the Lord God of Israel, There is an accursed thing in the midst of thee, O Israel: thou canst not stand before thine enemies, until ye take away the accursed thing from among you.” We need to make sure that we don't have sin in our lives, for it could be stopping our families, church, and even country from winning the battle. Ephesians 5:11 - "And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them." This verse comes to mind when I consider watching TV or movies, or listening to secular music. These are unfruitful works of people lost in darkness. Proverbs 16:20 - "He that handleth a matter wisely shall find good and whoso trusteth in the Lord happy is he."  The sin we deny (pride, selfishness, what we want, how we look) when we handle a matter wisely, gives way to a trust in Christ that satisfies.  Grasp hold of good judgement, slowness to anger, and a humble spirit.  Handling your  problems wisely will become easier. -Jason Brothers

1 John 3:22 - "And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight." Psalm 66:18 - "If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear me." If we have an unforgiving heart, bitterness, or any unconfessed sin, then our prayers fall on deaf ears. But if we are living a life that is pleasing to God and do what He says, He will grant us anything that we ask for. Psalm 119:9 - "Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? By taking heed thereto according to thy word." Do you have trouble with sin? Not sure how to overcome it? God gave us the perfect answer, His Word.  The verse says we must heed His Word, which means we have to be in it, to know it. Daily studying His Word will fill the gaps that sin has made and remake your wall to keep sin out. Don't take your reading lightly. - Joshua Gross

Psalm 53:2-3 - "God looked down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there were any that did understand, that did seek God. Every one of them is gone back: they are altogether become filthy; there is none that doeth good, no, not one." It should be our prayer that God would never have to look down on us to see if we are still seeking Him, and have to say no, we have gone back and become filthy. A good motivator to continue seeking Him, is to continually look back at the cross. - Brian Boots

Joshua 22:20 - "Did not Achan the son of Zerah commit a trespass in the accursed thing, and wrath fell on all the congregation of Israel? and that man perished not alone in his iniquity." If we have sin in our lives that we are holding on to, our family and even our church can suffer for it. Achan's sin cost him his life, his family, and "all that he had." In chapters 7 and 8, we see that once that sin was removed the nation of Israel was able to defeat the enemy. After we put away that sin, then we will prosper. - Garrett Longest
